The Fragrance Composition
A fragrance pyramid is essentially a triangular structure comprising of 3 sections; top notes, middle (or heart) notes and bottom (also known as base) notes. This fragrance pyramid helps us to visualize a perfume or fragrance in terms of what they’re comprised of in relation to their scent notes.
Top notes
Also referred to as head notes, are the initial notes that are detected when the perfume is first applied. They are the lightest and most volatile and typically last between 10 to 15 minutes.
Top notes are responsible for the first impression of the fragrance and typically include citrus, fruity, herbal, and aquatic scents.
Middle notes
Also referred to as heart notes, emerge after the top notes have evaporated. They are longer lasting than top notes and typically last between 2 to 4 hours. Middle notes are responsible for the character of the fragrance and typically include floral, fruity, and spicy scents.
Base notes
Also known as bottom notes, emerge after the middle notes have evaporated. They are the most long-lasting and can last between 4 to 8 hours. Base notes are responsible for the fixation effect of the fragrance and typically include woody, balsamic, musky, and oriental scents.
When choosing a perfume, it is important to take into consideration the different fragrance notes to understand how the fragrance will evolve on the skin over time. Additionally, each perfume has a unique combination of fragrance notes, making it exclusive and personal.
